About sumiyoshi-taisha

Sumiyoshi Taisha in Sumiyoshi-ku, Osaka, serves as the head shrine of approximately 2,300 Sumiyoshi shrines throughout Japan and is affectionately known as "Sumiyossan" by locals. The shrine honors the Sumiyoshi Sanjin (Sokotsutsu-no-o-no-mikoto, Nakatsutsu-no-o-no-mikoto, and Uwatsutsu-no-o-no-mikoto)—three deities of the sea and maritime safety—along with Empress Jingu. Visitors seek blessings for business prosperity, traffic safety, protection from misfortune, and many other benefits.

The shrine's distinctive arched Sorihashi Bridge and the magnificent National Treasure main hall complex offer spectacular sights for visitors. During the first three days of the New Year, over 2 million people visit this premier New Year's pilgrimage destination in Osaka, making it one of the most popular shrines in the region.
